7 Signs Your SEO Agency Is Coasting (Check in 20 Minutes)

SEO’s dirty secret: coasting is profitable
SEO retainers are the easiest service in marketing to coast on. Results lag effort by months, most clients can’t inspect the work, and a decent report template can make “we did nothing” look like progress. We’ve taken over enough accounts to know exactly what coasting looks like from the inside.
None of this means SEO doesn’t work. It means you should verify. Here are seven signs, checkable in about 20 minutes, no technical skills required.
The seven signs
- 1. The report never mentions leads. If every monthly report is impressions, sessions, and “keyword movement” – but never phone calls, form fills, or revenue – your agency is reporting activity, not outcomes.
- 2. You can’t name the last thing they shipped. Real SEO produces artifacts: pages published, titles rewritten, links earned, fixes deployed. Ask for last month’s list. Coasting agencies send you a “we continued optimizing” sentence.
- 3. Your blog reads like nobody’s audience. Generic posts (“The Importance of Digital Marketing”) signal content quota, not strategy. Every piece should target a search your buyers actually make.
- 4. Rankings are up, traffic is flat. A classic trick: rank #1 for keywords with no volume. If the ranking chart climbs while traffic and leads don’t move, the keywords were never worth ranking for.
- 5. Nothing changed after Google changed. Search shifted more in the last two years – AI Overviews, entity signals, review weight – than the previous ten. If your strategy document predates AI search and nobody’s updated it, you’re paying 2022 prices for 2019 work.
- 6. They never talk about your Google Business Profile. For any business serving a local market, the map pack is often the biggest lead source. An agency that ignores it is ignoring your cheapest wins.
- 7. Questions get answered with jargon. “We’re building topical authority through semantic content clusters” is what it sounds like when someone hopes you’ll stop asking. Good agencies explain in plain English what they did and why.
The 20-minute check
Open your last three monthly reports and answer three questions: What was shipped? What did it change? What’s next and why? If any answer is missing from all three reports, you have your answer.
Then get a second opinion. We built our free SEO audit for exactly this – a no-obligation look at what’s actually been done on your site versus what’s being billed. And if you’re evaluating replacements, our SEO buyer guides cover the questions that separate real partners from churn.
Worst case, the audit confirms your agency is doing great work – genuinely a good outcome, and now you know. Book a call and we’ll walk through it together.
