AI Overviews Are Eating Search. Here’s How to Stay Visible in 2026

The click isn’t the starting line anymore

For twenty years, search marketing had one goal: win the click. In 2026, a growing share of searches end without one. Google’s AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity answer the question directly – and your business is either part of that answer or it isn’t.

This isn’t a reason to panic. It’s a reason to update the playbook. The businesses losing visibility right now are the ones still optimizing exclusively for a results page that fewer people scroll.

How AI systems decide who to mention

AI search engines don’t rank pages – they synthesize answers from sources they trust. Across the work we’ve done in AI SEO, the citation patterns are consistent:

  • Entities beat keywords. AI systems reason about who you are – your business name, services, location, and how consistently that information appears across the web. Ambiguity gets you skipped.
  • Structured, direct answers get quoted. Pages that state facts plainly (“Managed IT support in Miami typically costs…”) get cited. Pages that bury answers under storytelling don’t.
  • Third-party corroboration matters more than ever. Reviews, directories, industry lists, and press mentions act as the AI’s fact-checkers. If only your own website says you’re great, that’s a weak signal.
  • Traditional SEO still feeds the machine. AI Overviews cite pages that already rank. Strong classic SEO is the price of admission, not a separate strategy.

The practical checklist

Here’s what we’re doing for clients right now, roughly in priority order:

  • Tighten your entity. Identical name, address, phone, and service descriptions across your site, Google Business Profile, and every directory that matters. Add Organization and Service schema so machines don’t have to guess.
  • Restructure key pages as answers. Lead with the answer, then elaborate. Use question-formatted headings that match how people actually ask.
  • Build citable proof. Original data, specific numbers, named case studies. AI systems love a quotable fact with a source.
  • Track AI visibility separately. Ask the major AI engines your money questions monthly (“best MSP in Doral,” “SEO agency for MSPs”) and record who gets named. That’s your new rank tracking.

The upside nobody mentions

When AI Overviews shrink casual traffic, the visitors who do click are further along and more serious. We’ve watched conversion rates rise on sites that lost raw traffic. Fewer tourists, more buyers – if your site is built to convert them.

We wrote a deeper primer on this in our AI Search Optimization guide. And if you want to know whether AI engines mention you today – and how to change it if they don’t – book a strategy call. We’ll run the checks live.
